This month I’m so excited to be designing the March mini block for the 12 Minis in 12 Months bundle! Birthday’s only come once a year, so to celebrate, I designed this Cupcake Mini Block and have a tutorial for you to turn it into a fun birthday banner. This is a simple project that can be used year after year to add a little homemade beauty to birthday celebrations.
Before you go any further, make sure you grab the Cupcake Mini Block pattern! It has all of the fabric requirements and the instructions to assemble the center cupcake block. Now it’s time to choose your fabric! I recommend pulling inspiration from the Cupcake Block as you select 3 fabrics to create the squares that complete the banner.
Fabric Requirements:
What you need:
Begin by cutting (10) 6” squares from fabrics of your choice, (10) coordinating batting squares, and (10) 6” backing squares. You will also need batting and backing for the 8" Cupcake Block. Baste the fabric to the batting using adhesive spray, and quilt each square as desired. I marked lines with my hera marker, and did simple 1” straight line quilting. Then align backing squares — right sides together — to the quilted block and sew along 3 edges of the square. Leave one edge completely unsewn. Trim the corners of each square and turn the blocks right side out.
Once the banner blocks are completed, take the premade bias tape or bias tape maker, and create a strip of desired length. The one pictured is 108” long. Fold the bias tape over the raw edge of the blocks and secure with wonder clips. Space each block about 1” apart to recreate the look of the original version. Begin at one end of the bias tape, and slowly stitch along the bias tape, making sure the needle catches both the front and back edges. Once you have stitched from one edge of the bias tape to the other, your banner is complete!
